MEASURING OF PARTICLES BY THE PICTURE PROCESSING SYSTEM PICAP

The purpose of this first step study was to measure dimensions, which also can be obtained by manual methods. Such measures are area, length and width. The mechanically and manually obtained results were then compared in order to evaluate the accuracy of the mechanical method. The particles were measured by fraction. The upper fractions were put on a contrasting sheet and studied directly by a tv-camera. The lower fractions were studied by a tv-camera connected with a microscope. The area studied was quantified to 64 x 64 points, the intensity of each point was quantified to 16 monochrome scale levels. The particles were detected by thresholding of the monochrome scale. Area, perimeter, length and width of each particle were measured. Finally, limitations of the present equipment and method were discussed. /TRRL/
