A promising start: Finland focus

Digital video broadcasting (DVB) applications could be used to solve transport telematics problems in Finland. The different transmission modes of DVB are described: satellite (DVB-S), cable (DVB-C), terrestrial (DVB-T), and DVB-hand-held (DVB-H). DVB-H is basically an extension to the DVB-T standard and enables mobile phones, hand-held computers and mobile devices to receive digital TV broadcasting over the digital terrestrial broadcasting network. Possible DVB applications in Finland include traffic information services on digital television and real-time public transport information at bus stops and in public transport vehicles. The development of the traveller information channel on digital TV in Finland is described. The economic and technical challenges associated with providing information to travellers en-route are outlined. There is a need for centralised sources or common portals for traffic information that are easy to use and accessible for everyone.
