Appetite for detection

Incident detection systems can be classified as those that rely on measurements from one sensor station and those that compare readings from two or more spatially separated stations. There are four types of algorithms used in incident detection systems: comparative algorithms, statistical algorithms, time series/filtering algorithms, and traffic modelling algorithms. Three criteria are used to assess the performance of incident detection algorithms: detection rates, false alarm rates and mean time to detection. Commercially available detection systems are described: ADDCO Inc.'s Virtual Transportation Operations (VTOC) software, the Cetra TMS4080 Wide Area Incident Detection system from CET Technologies Pte Ltd., the Idris Incident Detection System from Diamond Consulting Services Ltd., the Pyramids system from Econolite Control Products, Inc., EIS Electronic Integrated Systems Inc.'s Freeway Traffic Management System, systems from Excel Technology Group, Autoscope Video Vehicle Detection and Veridian Engineering Systems, the Vantage Video Detection Systems from Iteris, Inc., TransActive system from MI Service Group Ltd., VideoTrak Plus from Peek Traffic, INGRID from Siemens Traffic Controls Ltd., and Traficon's Video Image Processor.
