Integration of human behaviour in French road tunnel safety improvement
The new regulatory provisions on safety in tunnels of the French road network, dated August 2000, integrate the behaviour of the operator and the user. The paper first presents these provisions and describes the behaviour expected both from the operator and the user in case of incident; then it highlights the actual behaviour of the various actors involved via the lessons drawn from safety training exercises and feedback on experience. The paper finally presents projects under progress aimed on the one part at improving and maintaining the expertise of the operators, and on the other part at a better understanding of the users' behaviour - and their determinants to integrate them in the future into the design and operation of tunnels.
