From ballast sleepers to slab track construction with embedded rails

The slab track system INFUNDO, used for Deutsche Bahn AG high speed tracks or vegetated urban tracks, is characterised by continuous embedded rails. The supporting structure is a continuous, reinforced concrete support plate with two u-formed gaps where the rails are then positioned. Fastening is completed by casting the rails into a concrete trough with a poured cork-elastic mass. In this way the rails remain continuously embedded and protectively surrounded along their entire length. The construction details for INFUNDO are described and the technical advantages outlined. Ride comfort is improved, rail wear minimised and a smaller rail profile may be used. Noise and vibration reduction methods are described including the use of vegetation between tracks.
