JUSTIFICATION DESREVETEMENTS DE TUNNELS EN BETON PROJETE

This report studies the role of and the way of working with shotcrete in compact and soft rock. Because of its adhesion to the wall, shotcrete results in the "self locking" of the rock mass. A rock-bearing ring is formed, the arching of which complements the effect of the shotcrete itself. The installation of reinforcement (bolts) in the rock and in the lining (longitudinal bars, lattice), markedly increases the efficacy of such support. The different design methods for calculating the thickness of shotcrete linings are analyzed. Most methods lead to an overdesign of the lining for they do not take into account in their assumptions, the specific behaviour of shotcrete: very rapid laying, adhesion to the support, keying of the mass, role of bolts, influence of the reinforcement. The finite element method which takes into consideration the exact geometry of the environment and the complex geological and geotechnical conditions seems to be the most realistic method of designing a shotcrete lining. /TRRL/
