RTA heavy vehicle campaigns

An estimated 80 per cent of Australia’s freight is carried by road transport. The road transport industry is therefore an important sector of the national economy and represents about 5.6 per cent of Australia's gross domestic product (over $34 billion in 1999-2000). In terms of road trauma, each year in NSW there are on average 97 fatal crashes involving a heavy truck. In 2002, 121 people were killed in crashes involving a heavy truck, of which 86 people were killed in crashes in country areas. The estimated cost to the community of heavy truck fatal and injury crashes is in the order of $175m annually. Heavy vehicle safety is therefore a major road safety issue in NSW.
