RTA Western Region heavy vehicles

The Roads and Traffic Authority (RTA) Western Region conducted a Heavy Vehicle education program throughout 2003-2004 financial year targeting heavy vehicle operators and drivers. This paper looks at the heavy vehicle strategies used in this region, it explores how they were developed and their effectiveness. This project represented a challenging new direction in road safety as the RTA had not targeted the heavy vehicle industry with behavioural programs previously. The aim was to have “local”, strategies and actions to compliment the statewide programs. The strategies and actions devised appear quite simple, but the challenge was to deliver them in a credible way to an industry known for their distrust of and cynicism of government. This program, targeting both driver fatigue and seatbelt wearing, were made up of radio advertising, on-air radio promotions, workplace presentations, promotion and distribution of information from truckstops as well as face to face discussions with truck drivers.
