Definitions for marine safety research

The aim of this report is to provide definitions for key concepts in marine safety to guide future marine safety research in Western Australia. A set of definitions were developed using information that reflect issues from two key organisations the Marine Safety Directorate in the Department for Planning and Infrastructure at the Western Australian state level and the National Marine Safety Committee at the national level. These definitions include vessels; marine injuries; marine incidents; boating incidents; enclosed waters; inland waters; inshore waters; offshore waters; and marine-related activities. These definitions will be used to analyse existing data and may be refined at a later time through interviews and focus groups with boater groups prior to conducting additional research. (a)
