Compressive membrane action in bridge deck slabs
Compressive membrane action is usually ignored in bridge design, and the entire load is assumed to be carried by flexure of the deck slab. Allowing for the contribution of compressive membrane action may reduce the need for strengthening or replacement of deck slabs that do not have adequate flexural strength. This paper describes a method for assessing typical beam-and-slab bridge decks taking into account compressive membrane action. The method has been developed through the laboratory testing of concrete specimens and the use of non-linear finite element modelling. The application of the method however only requires a frame analysis program. (a) For the covering entry of this conference, please see ITRD abstract no. E211602.
