'Streets ahead' evaluation

'Streets Ahead' is a traffic safety education printed resource designed for use in primary schools. Children aged 8-10 years (year 3 & 4) in 19 Melbourne schools were included. Road crossing behaviour was observed at uncontrolled flagged school crossings and a multiple choice pencil and paper test was developed as the knowledge and attitude instrument. In relation to the control group, the treatment group as a while showed statistically valid improvements in attitude and knowledge but no improvement in crossing behaviour. Some schools, however, showed small (and inconsistently significant) behavioural improvements, some showed no change and others displayed a decline in behaviour. Only two schools showed some behavioural improvement, and there is some evidence that this may be associated with on-road training. (a)
