Enhancing Data Quality for Traveler Information

Data quality is an increasingly important issue, especially for TIC’s who need to deliver accurate traffic and travel information. The clarity of the content, geographical coverage, accuracy, completeness and level of availability are all crucially important. This need for improved data quality is largely driver by individual users and by the growth in personalized, route based travel information services. Good quality data is becoming an increasingly important barometer of system credibility. High quality traffic information requires quality process at each stage of the information chain. Traffic information is built from raw data (traffic flow, occupancy, weather conditions) and traffic messages (incident, road works...). Raw data are then processed before being distributed and used by different services such as travel times, internet real time traffic information, etc. The present paper will present the SAPN approach to this issue. SAPN currently operated several different systems for the collection of traffic data and weather information, which have recently been linked via an innovative traffic and weather platform. This platform improves raw data quality by reducing the number of disparate systems, increase the consistency of data formats, simplify maintenance tasks. The combination of above investment and existing quality control processes deliver high quality traffic information to SAPN TIC users.
