Electronic Access Control to Florence LTZ

In order to tackle the growing traffic emergency effectively for a sustainable mobility in the urban area, the city of Florence has implemented an advanced, automatic access control system in the city centre (historical area), including area pricing functionalities, provided by Autostrade per l’Italia. The system installed includes 15 electronic gates (gantries); 2 of them are specific for busses only. The main authorized vehicles identification tool is a DSRC (Dedicated Short Range Communication) radio link based on the TELEPASS transponder and interoperable with the current electronic tolling system used on the Italian toll motorway network. Results from the traffic restriction policy undertaken by the City of Florence are pretty good: minus 20% of vehicle accesses (around 2 million in December 2003), a significant increase of public transport use together with a clear enhancement of the environment conditions, due to the consequent decrease of exhaust-gas.
