Effective Verification of Traffic Information to Maintain the Accuracy of Information Provision

In Japan, the Vehicle Information and Communication Systems (hereinafter referred to as “VICS”), which display traffic congestion and other traffic information to car navigation systems, have been in operation since 1996 and VICS users are increasing year after year. In Tokyo and other major cities, traffic information systems such as VICS are of vital use to selecting routes to bypass heavy traffic. While the Metropolitan Police Department (hereinafter referred to as MPD) has been endeavoring to sustain its accuracy by regularly verifying the accuracy of congestion measurement, the MPD are receiving more and more requests for improvement in traffic information accuracy. This paper reports the verification method the MPD employs to verify data accuracy and its improvement activities.
