Development of the Universal Driving Simulator for ITS Researches

Universal Driving Simulator for Human, Vehicle and Traffic Research has been developed. It is applied for ITS research e.g. lane guidance, navigation and driving assistance system. This innovative simulator consists of an omni directional visual system, a XGA high quality image scene generator, a 6 DOF motion system, a layout free cockpit and a multibody vehicle dynamics simulation computer. Several scenarios can be used on this simulator. One is a virtual proving ground and another is a Tokyo metropolitan expressway route No.3. In general, the major problem of the high fidelity driving simulator is a simulator sickness. We are trying to solve this problem to apply the turning table. It can give the full scale yaw motion to the driver. The results of turning table evaluation indicates that it could be effective to reduce the simulator sickness and this simulator could be used for variety of ITS researches.
