Tools for the Pavement Preservation Industry

The Federal Highway Administration (FHWA) has changed its emphasis from construction of highways to their preservation. FHWA is offering assistance to state DOTs through several new programs. In 2004, federal aid funding was made available for preventative maintenance of pavement. The FHWA Office of Asset Management and the Foundation for Pavement Preservation have created a toolbox for state DOTs which is available in video DVD, on CD, and on the Internet. The National Highway Institute has created four courses to train professionals. FHWA also participated in the creation of the National Center for Pavement Preservation and its voluntary assessment program. FHWA has released a document defining the various categories of roadway maintenance, firmly establishing pavement preservation in that category.
