Integrated Culvert Design and Detailing in a CAD Environment

A culvert analysis, design, and detailing system is being developed for the Alabama Department of Transportation. In an earlier report (95-HRC-420855-CUA-01) the culvert analysis subsystem was described. This report (1) explicates the underlying formulations for box culvert design using the working stress and the ultimate strength design methodologies, and (2) describes a multimedia based culvert analysis and design system based on the formulations. The report is divided into 7 sections. Section II describes the overall theory of flexural design as applied to box culverts. Section III focuses on the flexural design of box culverts using the working stress design method. The general description of the method, the procedure for automating the method, and a design example are given in this section. Section IV deals with the ultimate strength design method of culverts as applied to flexural members. The general description, the design procedure, and an example for the method are given in this section. Section V discusses the design of culvert members subjected to combined axial compression and bending moment (external walls) and the design of members subjected to axial compression loads only (internal walls). Section VI describes the program for culvert analysis and design per the described formulations.
