A Database Construction System for Road Signs using a Mobile Mapping System

In this paper, we present a prototype system that can builds and updates a database for road signs more effectively. In the proposed system, a mobile mapping system, called 4S-Van, is successfully combined with image processing techniques. The 4S-Van consists of Global Positioning System(GPS), Inertial Navigation System(INS), and CCD cameras to obtain stereo images and record positioning and attitude information of the moving vehicle, making it possible to build 3D coordinates of geographic objects such as traffic lights and road signs along the road. More specifically, a database for road signs can be constructed via the 4SVan, containing stereo images and 3D coordinates of road signs. The 3D coordinates and corresponding images of road signs are compared with newly recorded stereo images from the 4S-Van. The proposed system searches for the corresponding road sign, indicated in the database, from the newly captured images and updates the information if it has been changed. Experimental results show the robustness of the proposed system.
