Consistency Checking Method in the Use Case Model for ITS Architecture

In the development of complex software system like ITS (Intelligent Transportation System), it is important to use hierarchical use case model due to the complex scope of development procedure. The use case model is core factor of the OMG (Object Management Group)'s UML (Unified Modeling Language) diagrams. It represents the proposed functionality of the new system. But use case models produced at different abstraction levels are easy to be inconsistent. Inconsistencies can lead to severe wrong development and increase the development cost, delay and fail of system. Therefore, managing consistencies between models is to improve the quality of the engineered software and to improve the effectiveness of the work. In this paper, I propose a method to check syntactic consistency automatically in the use case models at the different abstraction levels. This method is a rule-based approach which utilizes actor tree, use case relationship diagrams (decomposition, generalization, include, extend) and use case description. The proposed method is simulated on ITS architecture for the verification. I could detect several syntax errors in reference model of international ITS standards, ISO/ TC 204.
