Comprehensive Approach for Increasing Intersection Safety by Risk Assessment HMI

This work presents an approach for an advanced driver assistance system that uses comprehensive warning strategy to support the driver in his decision making process at intersections. Data from traffic lights and stationary video detection systems is analyzed and communicated wireless to the approaching car. On the onboard unit the situation analysis is done, the overall risk level is computed and presented to the driver. Our warning strategy approach is based on a HMI that allows the driver to easily assess if a situation is risky for his driving skills, or not. The overall system is implemented in an experimental vehicle and evaluated on a test intersection with traffic lights and video detection system.
