Controversies and Speed Cameras: Lessons Learnt Internationally

Research has shown that speed cameras reduce motor vehicle speeds and crashes. Cameras have been used extensively in jurisdictions such as Victoria, Australia and Great Britain, and much less often in the United States and Canada. They have been controversial wherever used. The authors describe the development of camera programs in Victoria and Great Britain and discuss the types of controversies that have arisen, the techniques used to address them, and what North America can learn from this experience.
