Classifying of Day-to-Day Variation of Traffic Flow with Cluster Analysis

This study shows a method to classify day-to-day variation of traffic flow pattern of urban expressways considering time-series change of traffic. Time-series change of traffic flow should be taken into account to consider more precise policies on highways because many issues on highway traffic, such as traffic congestion, depend on time axis. This study applies a cluster analysis method to classify traffic flow pattern of more than 100 days measured by detectors into a couple of groups. These groups are examined and some major factors of day-to-day traffic flow change at study sections are revealed.
