ACCIDENT INVESTIGATION SEAT BELTS - ONE YEAR STUDY ON SERIOUS AND FATAL INJURIES OF BELTED CAR OCCUPANTS

UNFALLUNTERSUCHUNG SICHERHEITSGURTEN - EINJAHRESSTUDIE UEBER SCHWERE UND TOEDLICHE VERLETZUNGEN BEI ANGEGURTETEN AUTOINSASSEN

In a one year study (Jan to Dec 1976) an inter-disciplinary working group investigated 304 traffic accidents of private vehicles in Switzerland with 410 injured occupants which had been seat belted, of which 257 suffered serious injuries and 153 had died. The data are based on police and medical reports and as far as possible on special comments regarding the accident vehicles and their seat belt systems, respectively. In particular, it was the aim to investigate and answer questions from the following problem areas: frequency and circumstances of seat belts with unfavourable effects; possible effects of incorrectly fitted seat belts; pattern of injuries of seat belted occupants and connection with various circumstances of a collision; influence of head supports on neck injuries; technical shortcomings of seat belts and anchor systems in present use; possibilities of improvements in accident reconstruction with the aid of computers; influence of speed on the seriousness of injuries; methods of assessment on the question of whether in an accident, seat belts had been worn or not; obtaining further points of interest for vehicle occupants as regards prevention of accidents and injury. The results of the investigation are amply supported by detailed case descriptions and comprehensive illustrations. /TRRL/
