Analysis of Close Encounters in Left-Turn Maneuvers For Evaluation of Urban Intersection Safety Countermeasures

Sensing, computing and communication technologies can be utilized to alert drivers of hazardous conditions when drivers are inattentive, fatigued or incapable of assessing traffic threat properly. This paper describes the investigation of traffic interaction in left-turn across path conflicts at signalized intersections in urban environment. The analysis of traffic patterns is conducted by examining field observation data, with emphasis on close encounters when the involved vehicles arrive at the point of conflict within a small time buffer. The circumstances that lead to close encounters are evaluated and the contributing factors and traffic attributes are analyzed. The results from this study provide valuable inputs that can be used in the implementation of intersection decision support systems.
