GPS Based Controls Rack Up Profit Potential

This article describes how global positioning system (GPS) technology is currently being used in surveying, construction management and machine control. GPS technology can increase the productivity of survey crews, reduce data collection time, improve survey accuracy and allow crews to work under most weather conditions. GPS systems also require less expertise to operate than conventional technology and offer the ability to use the technology over long distances with minimal setups. In construction management applications, GPS systems can be used to locate and manage mobile assets at construction sites in order to optimize asset utilization and productivity. Construction equipment is also being fitted with automatic control systems that use GPS technology to put information on design surfaces, grades and alignments inside the cab. In a few years, the benefits of GPS will also be possible with the European GALILEO satellite radio navigation system and the Russian GLONASS satellite navigation system.
