Compaction Is on a Roll

Manufacturers of compacting equipment have undergone some significant changes, both in terms of market structure and new products. This article summarizes recent industry consolidation, and describes some of the major technological advances driving changes in compaction equipment. One of the biggest advances in the latest generation of compaction machines is to improve visibility from the cab. The newest rollers now have features such as cabs that can slide beyond the machine frame to allow a better view of the drums, and pushbutton selection of seat direction which turns along with all the joystick controls. Intelligent controls linked with global positioning system and laser technology enable roller operators to gather compaction data with each rolling pass and fine-tune drum resonance parameters, maximizing the compaction effect. Many equipment manufacturers are also offering oscillating drum rollers that transmit lower levels of vibration than conventional vertically vibrating types. All of these technological advances can reduce the time a job requires, as well as improve job quality.
