Ground-Breaking Saudi Expressway

This article describes the construction of Saudi Arabia's new 755 km long Al Madinah-Yanbu-Rabigh Expressway, which is nearing completion. The project is the largest single road project in the history of Saudi Arabia, and is also the first design/build/finance contract in this sector. The project, which crosses the kingdom's mixed and often harsh terrain, is an integral part of a road/railroad "land bridge" between the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. The highway features impressively engineered tunnels and bridges, particularly through the arduous mountain terrain of Asir Province. The project was managed by a dedicated executive committee independent from other activities of the builder. The project required immense staff and equipment resources.
