Winding Down for Winter

Winter storage of construction equipment requires special maintenance practices. This article provides some maintenance recommendations for equipment with gasoline or diesel engines. Most importantly, contractors should winterize the fuel system by draining the gas out of the tank and bowl of gasoline engines or adding a fuel stabilizer. Although diesel fuel does not need to be drained, any water at the bottom of the tank should be drained and the tank completely filled with clean diesel fuel. A rust preventative fuel oil or biocide is typically added for an extended storage period. In addition, contractors should change engine oil, disconnect the battery and store it in a warm, dry area, flush the coolant system, and cover the engine with a weather resistant tarp. Proper storage of construction equipment in the winter can mean a quicker start to business operations in the spring.
