Cargo Piers in Dredging Harbour Waters

In this article, the authors discuss the structural behavior and reliability peculiarities of cargo piers in deep harbor water. They analyze deterministic and probabilistic reliability assessment methods for permeable cargo piers that are exposed to lateral berthing actions and gravity permanent and variable loads. New methodologies for approaching a probabilistic reliability assessment of existing cargo piers are discussed. The authors note that the survival probability assessment of piers is based on their irreversible serviceability and safety margins. A numerical example illustrating the benefits of probability-based approaches is presented and design practice methodologies of cargo piers are included.
