Four Car-free Days in Vicence

The city of Vicence, Italy had four car-free days from February 4-7, 2005. The aim of the ban on cars was to lessen the city's chronic air pollution. There is special concern about PM10, a small particulate that is thought to come predominantly from vehicle exhaust. It is not certain that the ban produced any results. The city government is examining other options to control air pollution by replacing polluting vehicles with electric buses, a subway, or special transit roadways that route transit traffic away from the city center.
