How Wireless Technology is Easing the Migration from Serial Data Communications to Ethernet Communications in Intelligent Transportation Systems

This article describes how wireless technology is paving the way from serial data communications to Ethernet communications in intelligent transportation systems (ITS). Spread-spectrum wireless communications systems have been accepted as the industry standard for extending communications beyond the fiber-optic backbone. There are hundreds of “legacy” devices in North America designed to communicate using the RS-232 serial data communication standard only. They can be integrated easily into expanding TCP/IP Ethernet infrastructure. The article describes how this can be done so that a system operator can take advantage of Ethernet communications without deploying a completely new system.
