Money, Politics and Stress - the GM's Lament

This article describes the results of a survey offering a general overview of transit agency general managers. It provides detailed information about transit agency general managers, including their incomes, gender, education levels, and their greatest challenge—funding. Top executives are generally males who are at least 50 years old, with 60 percent holding a master’s degree. The average salary is slightly more than $108,000, although there is wide variation. The average annual operating budget for all who responded to the survey was more than $50 million, and 82 percent of respondents reported that funding issues have become more important in recent years. Politics and the public’s perception of transit ranked as the second and third worries.
