FIT for fire response management
This article highlights European research into tunnel fire safety undertaken by the Fire in Tunnels (FIT) Work Package 4 (WP4). It describes best practices in tunnels for fire prevention, training, accident management, and fire emergency operations. The article suggests that emergency response plans should be developed as soon as a new tunnel is proposed so that the designer can provide adequate systems for responding to fire and controlling smoke. The role of the tunnel operator involves appointing a safety manager responsible for cooperating with emergency services as well as working with the tunnel operator organization. The article describes the role of the tunnel operator, the emergency services and the user before a fire, during a fire, as well as afterwards.
