20 Years of Vehicle Size Trends: Have We Reached Another Turn in the Road?

In order to respond to parking needs, parking consultants began monitoring vehicle dimensions in 1984. This article suggests that increasing gas prices may be beginning to have an effect on the size of vehicles people are choosing to buy. In the spring/summer of 2004, higher gas prices did not affect the size of vehicles sold. Trends began to change late in 2005, however, as sales shifted away from sport utility vehicles to sport wagons, and sport wagon sales shifted to smaller classes of sport wagons. This article concludes that the steady increase in vehicle sizes since 1995 has leveled out and will turn downwards somewhat. For this reason, recommended parking dimensions last adjusted in 1999 will not be changed any time soon
