Cold Lay, Hot Prospects

Cold laid asphalt has become an increasingly attractive option for road operators, and improvements in, for example, emulsion technology means that cold-lay stone mastic asphalt (SMA) thin surfacings might perform equally with hot-mix materials in their application and durability. Nynas Bitumen has developed an emulsion that enhances the performance characteristics of a cold-lay SMA thin surfacing material. This emulsion incorporates a polymer-modified binder, which gives it good, early life cohesion and strength to a proprietary thin surfacing SMA mix. Nynas Bitumen’s primary objectives in designing this emulsion were to control drainage, stop sagging of the material, and to ensure that the emulsion maintains a thick binder film around the coated aggregate. Other objectives were to maintain the workability of the material after several days and to allow the material to be transported over long distances. Road trial tests revealed that cold mix asphalts showed good resistance to deformation and performed as well as hot mix equivalents.
