An Observational Study of Seat Belt Use Among Taxi Drivers in Boston

This article reports on a study of safety belt use among taxi drivers in Boston, Massachusetts. Taxi drivers are exempt from the state law mandating safety belt use. The observational study included 250 taxicabs; 247 of the cabs were driven by men (98.9%). Overall, 17 of the 250 taxicab drivers (6.8%) wore safety belts, whereas 233 (93.2%) did not. According to data from the Massachusetts Governor's Highway Safety Bureau, the observed safety belt use rate of drivers in general in Massachusetts is 64%. The authors conclude that stronger safety belt use legislation in Massachusetts may help to improve safety belt use among taxi drivers in Boston.
