TRAFFIC TRAINING OF CHILDREN, A LITERATURE REVIEW ON THE BASIS OF AN INSTRUCTIONAL MODEL

Traffic education has little or no empirical foundations, since the results of traffic training experiments have not often been put into practice. One of the main reasons is that traffic training experiments are difficult to translate into operational programs due to the contradictory results and to the particular experimental conditions in which they are carried out. To aid generalization of the results of these experiments, a model for traffic training has been developed in which these experiments can be placed. The components of the model - educational objectives, content and structure, of instruction, instruction process in terms of learner, social and instruction variables, and evaluation in terms of product and process - appear to be useful in discussing the experimental literature. It demonstrates the necessity of an explicit formulation of educational objectives and content of instruction. Further it appears that the evaluation of results has to take into account the different levels of instruction such as knowledge and behaviour. The results of the experiments demonstrate for example that knowledge is learned more easily than behaviour, and that, depending on the instruction method, younger children are more difficult to instruct than older children, and finally, - that a combination of instruction methods, particularly theoretical instruction and behavioural training, usually gives the most promising results. /TRRL/
