AN AGE ANALYSIS OF TRAFFIC ACCIDENTS AND OFFENCES

Data related to accident involvement and convictions for breaches of the south Australian road traffic act have been analysed according to age. The data come from the south Australian police department's record of accidents and the motor registration division's record of offences kept as part of the points demerit scheme. Accident statistics are analysed by the road traffic board as part of their routine function in conjunction with the Australian bureau of statistics. The accident data used are taken from the board's annual published summary "road traffic accidents" for the years 1972-1975 inclusive. The analyses show an increase in accident involvement, responsibility and casualties in the older age groups. The conclusions drawn from the analyses of both offences and accidents confirm the decline in driving skills with increasing age. This paper has been presented to the 13th annual conference of the Australian Association of Gerontology, Adelaide 26th September - 1 October, 1977. /TRRL/
