STRUCTURAL DESIGN OF FLEXIBLE ROAD PAVEMENTS

DISENO ESTRUCTURAL DE CARRETERAS CON PAVIMENTO FLEXIBLE

A semi-empirical method for the design of flexible road pavements is presented. It is based on the research conducted at the Institute of Engineering (experimental test roads, evaluation of existing highways, and circular test track) from 1962 to 1973. The method assumes that the road structure is properly simulated by a multilayer solid of uniform relative strength, in which the logarithm of the strength CBR is proportional to the logarithm of the cumulative number of 18 kip single axle loads. The experimental correlation is highly satisfactory. Failure conditions under equivalent cumulative traffic (sl) are stated in terms of depth and vertical stress corresponding to the ultimate bearing capacity at that depth. For design purposes, life to failure (sl) is defined by the conditions of CBR and depth. Design curves in Appendix A include numerous variables, which should be analyzed within a general framework to arrive at economic solutions. It is considered that the method is reliable and not difficult to employ. Through its use in practice and with the help of the research underway, necessary adjustments can be made. /TRRL/
