MEASUREMENT OF BULK DENSITY AND MOISTURE RATIO OF CEMENT-STABILIZED SOIL BY A RADIATION METHOD, A COMPARISON WITH OTHER METHODS

This work investigates the use of the radiation meter type hdm4sm for determination of bulk density and moisture ratio in production control of cement stabilization work. The work also comprises a check of the moisture ratio by means of the "speedy moisture tester super 200". The tests were made in both field and laboratory. In the latter the influence of composition, moisture ratio and compaction was studied, and the results were compared with conventional measurements. The purpose of the field tests was a comparison between field and laboratory results. (A) Moisture ratio: the standard deviation of the moisture ratio calculated from measurements with the HDM4 was 0.30%. This value represents the deviation from the regression line relating moisture ratio according to HDM4 and conventional oven drying. The standard deviation of the moisture ratio values according to the "speedy moisture tester" was found to be 0.35%. This value, pertaining to the interval 0-7%, was computed from the variance about the regression line relating the measured values to values from oven drying tests. In this interval the "speedy" was quicker and gave more reliable values than the HBD4. (B) bulk density: the standard deviation of the HDM4 was 0.20 g/cubic cm, calculated from differences between means and individual values in pairs. Values obtained by the water displacement method gave a higher standard deviation, 0.05 g/cubic cm. /TRRL/
