RECOMMENDATIONS FOR DETERMINING WEAR AND DEFORMATION OF PAVEMENTS

MERKBLATT ZUM ERFASSEN DES VERSCHLEISSES UND DER VERFORMUNGEN VON FAHRBAHNBEFESTIGUNGEN

The recommendations discuss criteria for using measuring procedures for determining alterations in the surface layers (deterioration of evenness) and the behaviour of the material (wear, deformation). This information is required for planning field and laboratory investigations. Significant factors obtained from the measurements include geometric factors (depth of tracking, width of tracking, largest and mean profile depth) or factors related to the materials (loss of material, change in density), and they can be related to the traffic density. The measuring methods are divided into profile measurements (mechanical and optical contour measurements), measurements of layer thicknesses of the pavement (core sampling, electromagnetic distance measurements, measurements by way of distance studs, thickness indicators) and weighing methods (weighing of losses or pre- and post-weighing). In the section "measuring tasks and their solutions", the recommendations give directions for the application of measuring methods; for flexible designs a combination of several methods are required for the purpose of separating wear and deformation. /TRRL/
