THE SAAB-SCANIA STEAM ENGINE PROJECT. EVALUATION OF THE STEAM OPERATED SYSTEM

In the SAAB-Scania steam operated system the environmental properties of the Rankine engine have been established, in addition to the multi-fuel properties. Fuel economy seems to be the real problem likely to affect future use of the Rankine engine, including its use in passenger cars. The fuel economy of a Rankine engine is not inferior to that of an otto cycle engine of today at a relatively low working temperature. This applies in particular to the passenger car and especially to its use in urban traffic. An increase of the efficiency level seems to be possible through the following measures: decreased power need for the operation of aid equipment increasing the efficiency of components, increased working temperature and measures in the working cycle improving the efficiency. The following fields of application seem possible for the Rankine engine; (1) at the present stage: marine engines, generating set, pump unit, heat pump operation and total energy systems. (2) with increased working temperature: fork lift trucks and mining equipment. (3) with future increased fuel economy: use in passenger cars in urban traffic. /TRRL/
