APPLICATION OF THE FINITE ELEMENT METHOD TO THE PREDICTION OF COLLAPSE LOADS

In this paper the application of elasto-plastic finite element methods to the prediction of collapse loads is investigated. Two techniques are then presented for the estimation of numerical collapse loads, and by consideration of a number of examples it is shown that both techniques give a better estimate of the collapse load for a particular problem than would otherwise have been obtained with the same numerical sophistication. Both these techniques can be applied to a wide range of problems, however it is anticipated that the first technique will provide a useful practical estimate of the collapse load for a given problem, while the second technique can be adopted when a more detailed investigation of the effect of soil-structure interaction is required. /Author/
