AN INVENTORY OF SPEED REDUCING ROAD HUMPS

INVENTERING AV HASTIGHETSREDUCERANDE GUPP I VAEGBANAN

This report presents a questionnaire sent out to local and regional road authorities in order to find out the types of road humps used in Sweden. Attitudes of the authorities and the public were also investigated. In most cases the road hump was used as a speed reducing device but also as a means to limit the through traffic. Some authorities wanted to use the road humps in order to improve bus priority, while others mentioned problems occurring during the winter, such as difficulties in snow clearance and efficiency reduction due to snow and ice. The attitude of the public to road humps is often very negative. The two main causes for this attitude are: (1) the driver sees no reason for the hump and therefore the humps are considered to bring about an unreasonable lowering of road quality. (2) the road humps provide discomfort whether the driver adjusts the speed to the occasion or not. /TRRL/
