The Effect of Simulator Platform Motion on Pilot Training Transfer: A Meta-Analysis

The authors used meta-analysis (MA) methods to generate an estimate of the true mean effect size (delta) for simulator motion with regard to fixed-wing pilot training transfer. A "d" statistic was used for effect size calculations based on the information available in the sources the authors drew upon. The results of the MA suggested a small, positive effect for motion, "d"=.16. The sampling error variance was larger than the observed variance of "d" in the assessed studies, so no credibility interval could be drawn. This led to a negative variance estimate for (delta) and therefore an estimated SD sub delta of 0. Contrary to an earlier MA on this subject, this analysis showed simulator motion had a small, positive effect on pilot training transfer. However, the small sample size and methodological concerns require that these results be interpreted cautiously.
