Haines has the Hunger for More Success

Andrew Haines is credited with saving South West Trains by changing every aspect of its business: the timetable, the trains, the corporate culture. In this article, he discusses his plans to repeat that success as managing director of First Group's rail operation. In his position he oversees ScotRail, Transpennine Express, Great Western, Great Western Link, Hull Trains, GB Railfreight, and First Info. Though Haines hesitates to talk about specific plans in improving First Group's performance, among them are his intentions to improve reliability (especially delays at Great Western). Comparing the vision laid out in a paper he co-authored in 2001 titled "Platform for Change," Haines believes he has come close vis-a-vis his reforms at First Rail. These include instituting integrated control centers, taking maintenance in-house, and producing robust timetables.
