Up All Night with Dyno and the Train Gang

This article describes maintenance operations during the night shift at the Tyesley depot in Birmingham (UK) to ensure that a fleet of well-maintained and well-presented trains are ready in time for the morning rush hour. Central Maintrain maintains 155 trains each night at five depots across the Midlands region. They provide routine maintenance to its rolling stock with military precision to improve the reliability, cleanliness, and overall presentation of the trains. A major investment in a Dynanometer allows Maintrain to conduct tests that were previously impossible at depots. It has proved invaluable in helping to improve Central Trains' reliability record, and has been so successful in improving engine reliability that the company invested in another Dynanometer for a second depot. To address complaints about dirty trains, Maintrain has introduced additional cleaning procedures. Not only do all trains undergo mechanical washing, but workers manually clean each train inside and out. Punctuality and reliability have seen significant improvement over the last 12 months. These improvements have resulted in significantly reduced passenger complaints.
