A Community-Based Survey of Domestic Accidents among People Living in the Rural Areas of Rafsanjan-Iran (April 2003 - March 2004)

This paper describes the first community-based study among people living in the rural area of Rafsanjan for collecting accident data. The risk of experiencing a serious injury because of a domestic accident (DA) is estimated for different age groups of two genders. The results of the study underlined the importance of DA injuries in the health of people living in the community. The results highlighted a need for a surveillance system for monitoring and preventing DA injuries in the area. This can be a nationwide system in the country. Further, the results of this study can be used to prioritize interventions for preventing DA based on the severity and the frequency of resulting injuries. Local studies such as the one presented in the paper can also provide useful clues regarding the aetiology of this public health problem. Health programs for preventing DA injuries including strategies in order to ensure safer homes among people living in the area must be developed. There is also clearly a need for educating people living in the community how to prevent DA.
