Investigation of integrity and effectiveness of RC bridge deck rehabilitated with CFRP composites

This report develops and validates methodologies for extending the service life of reinforced concrete bridge structures as well as monitoring the structure in order to validate or confirm the effectiveness of the repair and strengthening approach. Specifically, the report evaluates the integrity and effectiveness of external bonding of carbon fiber reinforced polymer (CFRP) composites to the bridge deck soffit of Spans 8 and 9 of the eastbound structure of the Watson Wash Bridge located in the Mojave Desert in California. The report first presents a literature review of flexural strengthening and modal based non-destructive damage detection. It next describes the application of wet lay-up and pultruded CFRP composites to the deteriorated decks of the bridge. A global vibration-based nondestructive evaluation procedure that measures changes in modal strain energy is used to determine stiffness changes in the bridge structure before and after application of CFRP composites. A reliability index is used for combining the effects of material variation, CFRP composite degradation, and measured stiffness changes from the field to assess the service life of a FRP rehabilitated structure. Finally, a cost comparison is provided which compares the cost to replace the bridge versus rehabilitation using FRP composites.
