ROUTE MASTER : BETTER ARRIVAL TIME INFORMATION INCREASES THE APPEAL OF PUBLIC TRANSPORT

This article focuses on transit riders’ desire for better information regarding bus arrival time, and how it is provided in two provinces in the Netherlands. The article notes that riders in rural areas especially need reliable information because of the reduced service frequency. However, dynamic bus stop information systems, which work well in urban areas, require a connection to external power, which is too expensive in rural areas. The article describes a wireless solution that doesn’t call for external power. Each bus is equipped with a Global Positioning System (GPS) unit and a GPRS transmitter. Every half minute the system transmits the bus’ current position to the traffic control center where arrival time is calculated and then sent to the bus stop display via Data Radio Channel. The display can also relay information about delays or possible detours.
